Joakim 'Jo' Bonnier was sadly killed in a crash during this race. At 8.25 on the Sunday morning, on the straight between Mulsanne Corner & Indianapolis Corner, his yellow Ford Cosworth DFV-powered Lola T280 collided with the 'Scuderia Filipinetti' Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona driven by Swiss amateur driver Florian Vetsch. His Lola was catapulted 100 metres over the Armco barrier and into the trees next to the track, completely destroying the car. Bonnier was killed upon impact.
